5th Regiment Lincoln Militia

John Fonger came to Canada from New Jersey as a young man and joined the 1st Flank Company 5th Regiment Lincoln Militia. After the war he was given a land grant and settled in the St. George area of the then Dumfries Township. Whether or not he farmed the land is unclear as on the 1851 census he was listed as a labourer.

Reverend Daniel MacLean of Grace United Church, Caledonia and Major Mark Douglas of the Essex and Kent Scottish regiment (This regiment had its beginnings with the 1st Essex Flank Company that Peter served with during the War of 1812.

Peter Young was born 1784 in Waterloo Ferry (Fort Erie) and died on 21 October 1846 in Seneca Township, Haldimand County, Ontario.  He was the second child of Daniel Young (1749 Canajoharie, New York, 09 May 1835 Barton twp. Ont.) and Elizabeth (Windecker) Young (1763 Schoharie, New York, 08 Mar 1830 Barton twp. Ont.).

Richard Hatt

Richard Hatt II was a Businessman, judge, office holder, militia officer, postmaster and the recognized founder of Dundas.

Richard emigrated in March 1792 arriving in Canada that June. He moved to Upper Canada and by December 1794 was engaged in the Mercentile Business.

Richard Hatt’s father, Richard Hatt I, told his son  that to be Industrious, obliging, and to act with strict fidelity, was the key to success in life. At the time of his father arriving in the spring of 1796,  Richard was a partner of McKay & Co. Almost immediately, Richard decided to move out of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and as early as 1796, settled in Ancaster Township and opened a General Store. He seemed to be more interested in processing goods rather than just provisioning.
